President Olusegun Obasanjo's chosen successor
was proclaimed victor in April 2007 in a presidential election which
observers said was not credible. The electoral commission said Mr Yar'Adua
of the ruling People's Democratic Party had won the election, with
24,638,063 votes against 6,605,299 for his nearest rival, Muhammadu
Buhari of the All Nigeria People's Party.
1999 Won Nigeria's presidential elections
Parliament has two chambers. The House of Representatives
has 360 members, elected for a four year term in single-seat constituencies.
The Senate has 109 members, elected for a four year term in 36 3-seat
constituencies and 1 seat in a single-seat constituency.
