President

Lansana Conté (1984/1999) PUP

The president is elected for a five year term by the people.

President Conte was born in 1944. After serving in the French army, he returned home in 1958 and, in 1975, had become chief of staff. He seized power after President Sekou Toure's death in 1984, suspended the constitution, freed political prisoners and encouraged exiles to return. By 1992 he had organised a return to civilian rule, proceeding to win a presidential poll in 1993 and parliamentary elections in 1995.

Parliament

The Assemblée Nationale (National Assembly) has 114 members, elected for a four year term, 38 members in single-seat constituencies and 76 members by proportional representation.

The government is formed by the PUP.
