The Congo River is Africa's most powerful river and the second most voluminous river in the world with a discharge of 1,500,000 cubic feet of water per second. It is the fifth longest river in the world, draining a basin of nearly 1.5 million square miles. |
Near the end of the 'Middle Congo', the river slows to a virtual stand-still for 20 miles, a section known as Stanley or Malebo Pool. Here the river is 15 miles wide and flanked by the capital cities of Kinshasa and Brazzaville. |
Although the Livingstone Falls prevent access from the sea, nearly the entire Congo is readily navigable in sections, especially between Kinshasa and Kisangani. The Congo River still is a lifeline. |
The Matadi Bridge, also known as the OEBK Bridge, is a suspension bridge in the port of Matadi Crossing the Congo River, it carries the main highway between the capital Kinshasa and the Atlantic coast. As well as passing through Matadi it links the ports of Boma and Banana. |
